Ultrasonic scalpel

An ultrasonic scalpel uses a blade vibrating at ultrasonic frequency to cut tissue and coagulate vessels at the same time, with less heat spread than electrosurgery. It is used mainly in laparoscopic and open general, colorectal, gynaecological and thyroid surgery.

Common types

  • Generator: the console that drives the handpiece and controls power levels.
  • Reusable handpiece: the transducer that converts electrical energy into vibration, used over many cases.
  • Laparoscopic shears: long single-use instruments for minimally invasive procedures, in several shaft lengths.
  • Open surgery shears: shorter instruments for open procedures such as thyroidectomy.
  • Combined ultrasonic and bipolar systems: deliver both energies through one instrument.

What to tell us when you ask for a quotation

  • Generator power levels and whether it also supports bipolar energy
  • Handpiece type and expected number of uses
  • Instrument shaft lengths and diameters (for example for laparoscopic or open use)
  • Instrument compatibility with the generator and the starter quantity of shears
  • Foot switch and hand activation options
  • Power supply voltage, frequency and plug type
  • Quantity, destination country and the delivery terms you want (for example EXW, FOB or CIF).

Documents to ask for

Buyers ask for CE marking under the EU MDR or the destination country's registration, ISO 13485 for the maker, IEC 60601-1 reports for the generator, and ISO 11135 or ISO 11137 sterilisation validation for the single-use shears.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

Are the shears single-use or reusable?

Most shears are sold as single-use sterile instruments, while the handpiece is reusable for a stated number of cycles. Ask for the running cost per case so you can compare systems fairly.
