Operating table

An operating table supports and positions the patient during surgery, with a tabletop divided into sections that tilt, raise and lower. It is the central fixture of every operating theatre, from general surgery suites to day surgery units and specialist theatres.

Common types

  • Electro-hydraulic table: motorised hydraulics move the sections from a handset, suited to busy general theatres.
  • Mechanical or manual hydraulic table: foot pump and hand cranks, no mains power needed, common in smaller facilities.
  • Orthopaedic traction table: adds leg traction attachments and a perineal post for hip and femur fracture work under imaging.
  • Mobile column table with transferable tops: the tabletop detaches and travels on a trolley, shortening turnaround between cases.
  • Specialty tables: ophthalmic, urology and gynaecology tables with dedicated head rests, leg supports or drainage trays.

  • Radiolucent top and C-arm access if intraoperative imaging is planned
  • Accessory list: arm boards, shoulder and body supports, leg holders, anaesthesia screen, traction kit
  • Power supply voltage, frequency and plug type, and the control type (wired handset, wireless, foot switch)
  • Quantity, destination country and the delivery terms you want (for example EXW, FOB or CIF).

Documents to ask for

Buyers usually ask for CE marking under the EU MDR or the destination country's registration, ISO 13485 for the maker, and test reports to IEC 60601-1 and IEC 60601-2-46 for electrically powered operating tables.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

Do we need a radiolucent tabletop?

Only if you plan to use a C-arm or other imaging during surgery on that table. Radiolucent tops let X-rays pass through the patient support, and the quotation should state which sections are radiolucent and how far the C-arm can travel under them.
