Scalpel blades

Scalpel blades are sharp, usually carbon or stainless steel blades fitted to a handle, or supplied as a complete disposable scalpel, for incisions and fine cutting. They are used in operating theatres, wards, clinics, laboratories and autopsy rooms.

Common types

  • Detachable blades: numbered shapes such as 10, 11, 15 and 20 that fit standard reusable handles.
  • Disposable scalpels: blade and plastic handle supplied together as one sterile item.
  • Safety scalpels: have a retractable blade or shield to reduce sharps injuries.
  • Carbon steel versus stainless steel: carbon is often sharper, stainless resists corrosion.
  • Skin graft and dermatome blades: wide blades used for harvesting split-thickness skin grafts.

Documents to ask for

Buyers ask for CE marking under the EU MDR or the destination country's registration, ISO 13485 for the maker, ISO 11137 or ISO 11135 sterilisation validation, and conformity to ISO 7740 for blade and handle fitting dimensions.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

Which handles fit which blades?

Handle number 3 fits the smaller blades such as 10, 11 and 15, and handle number 4 fits the larger blades such as 20 to 25. Stating both in the request avoids mismatched orders.
