Surgical mesh

Surgical mesh is an implantable woven or knitted sheet that reinforces weakened tissue, most often in hernia repair. It is used in inguinal, umbilical, incisional and hiatal hernia surgery, by open and laparoscopic approaches.

Common types

  • Polypropylene mesh: the most common material for open inguinal hernia repair.
  • Lightweight or large-pore mesh: less material per area, often chosen for flexibility.
  • Composite or coated mesh: has a barrier layer on one side for placement inside the abdomen.
  • Pre-shaped mesh and plugs: cut or formed for specific hernia types, such as 3D anatomical or plug and patch.
  • Absorbable or partly absorbable mesh: absorbable components for temporary reinforcement.

Documents to ask for

Buyers usually ask for CE marking under the EU MDR or the destination country's registration, ISO 13485 for the maker, ISO 10993 biocompatibility data, and ISO 11135 or ISO 11137 sterilisation validation.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

Can any mesh be placed inside the abdomen?

No. Mesh placed in contact with the bowel is usually a composite type with a barrier layer, and the maker's instructions state where each product may be placed. Ask for the indications from the instructions for use.
