Pathology equipment

Pathology equipment prepares and processes tissue samples so they can be cut, stained and examined under a microscope. Hospital histopathology departments, cancer centres and reference laboratories use it to support diagnosis.

Common types

  • Tissue processor: fixes, dehydrates and infiltrates tissue with paraffin.
  • Embedding centre: places processed tissue into paraffin blocks.
  • Rotary microtome: cuts thin sections from paraffin blocks.
  • Cryostat: cuts frozen sections, often for rapid diagnosis during surgery.
  • Slide stainer and coverslipper: automate staining and mounting of slides.

Documents to ask for

Buyers usually ask for CE marking under the EU IVDR or the destination country registration where applicable, ISO 13485 for the maker and IEC 61010-1 test reports.

Why is fume control important in a tissue processor?

Tissue processing uses formalin, xylene and alcohols, which release harmful vapours. Closed processors with carbon filters or external extraction reduce staff exposure.
