Pressure-relief mattress

A pressure-relief mattress spreads or alternates the pressure on a patient's body to reduce the load on bony areas during long periods in bed. It is used on hospital beds, in intensive care, in nursing homes and in home care for bed-bound patients.

Common types

  • Alternating pressure air mattress: a pump inflates and deflates air cells in turn so contact points keep changing.
  • Low air loss mattress: a blower lets air escape slowly through the cover to help manage skin moisture and heat.
  • Bubble pad overlay: a thin alternating air pad placed on top of an existing mattress for lower-risk patients.
  • Static foam or gel mattress: high-specification foam or gel that redistributes pressure without a pump.
  • Pressure-relief seat cushion: air, gel or foam cushion for wheelchairs and chairs.

What to tell us when you ask for a quotation

  • Type (alternating air, low air loss, overlay or static foam) and mattress dimensions to match the bed
  • Cell design, cell height and number of cells, plus maximum patient weight
  • Pump features: cycle time, pressure adjustment, alarms for power failure and low pressure, and static or CPR mode
  • Cover material (vapour permeable, waterproof, removable and washable) and fire-resistance rating
  • Voltage and plug type for the pump
  • Quantity, destination country and the delivery terms you want (for example EXW, FOB or CIF).

Documents to ask for

Buyers usually ask for CE marking under the EU MDR or local registration, ISO 13485 for the maker, IEC 60601-1 reports for the electric pump, and fire-resistance test reports for the cover and foam to the standard the destination requires.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

Can an alternating mattress be placed on any hospital bed?

Most are made in standard widths and lengths for ward beds, but the buyer should confirm the bed platform size and side rail height. A thick air mattress raises the patient, so the side rails must still be high enough above the mattress surface.
