Cold room and walk-in cold storage

A cold room is an insulated, temperature-controlled room built from panels with its own refrigeration system, used to store large volumes of medicines, vaccines, blood products or reagents. It is used in central medical stores, hospital pharmacies, blood banks and distribution warehouses.

Common types

  • Pharmaceutical cold room: holds +2 to +8 °C for medicines and vaccines.
  • Freezer room: holds temperatures well below zero for frozen products.
  • Controlled ambient room: holds +15 to +25 °C for products that must not get too hot.
  • Modular cold room: assembled on site from prefabricated panels and can be moved or extended.
  • Containerised cold room: built inside a shipping container for quick deployment.

What to tell us when you ask for a quotation

  • Internal dimensions or storage volume, and target temperature range
  • Panel thickness and insulation type, floor type and door size
  • Refrigeration units: number (with backup unit), refrigerant and ambient temperature they must handle
  • Temperature monitoring and alarm system, with remote alerts and data logging
  • Power supply, voltage and backup generator requirements
  • Shelving or racking, and installation and commissioning on site
  • Quantity, destination country and the delivery terms you want (for example EXW, FOB or CIF).

Documents to ask for

Buyers usually ask for electrical safety marking for the refrigeration equipment, WHO PQS prequalification where a model is listed for immunisation programmes, and a temperature mapping report after installation.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

Why is temperature mapping needed after installation?

Temperature varies inside a room, especially near doors, evaporators and walls. Mapping with several loggers shows where the room holds the right range and where products should not be stored, which good distribution practice inspectors usually expect to see.
