Infant incubator

An infant incubator provides a closed, warmed and humidified space for premature or sick newborns, keeping their temperature stable while allowing care through portholes. It is used in neonatal intensive care units, special care baby units and for transport between hospitals.

Common types

  • Standard incubator: a fixed or wheeled unit with air and skin temperature control for the neonatal unit.
  • Dual-wall incubator: a double canopy that reduces heat loss through the walls.
  • Incubator with servo humidity and oxygen control: adjusts humidity and oxygen to set levels.
  • Transport incubator: a portable unit with batteries, gas cylinders and mounting for ambulances.
  • Hybrid incubator and radiant warmer: can switch between a closed incubator and an open warmer.

What to tell us when you ask for a quotation

  • Humidity system (passive or servo-controlled) and oxygen control
  • Built-in weighing scale, X-ray tray and tilting mattress
  • Number of portholes, canopy type and height adjustment
  • For transport incubators: battery life, gas supply and vehicle mounting

Documents to ask for

Buyers usually ask for CE marking under the EU MDR or local registration, ISO 13485 for the maker, IEC 60601-1 and IEC 60601-2-19 test reports, and IEC 60601-2-20 for transport incubators. Hybrid units with a radiant warmer are also tested to IEC 60601-2-21.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

What is the difference between air mode and skin mode?

In air mode the incubator keeps the air inside at a set temperature. In skin mode a probe on the baby's skin feeds back to the heater so it keeps the baby's skin at a set temperature. Most units offer both modes.
