Infusion pump

An infusion pump is an electrically powered device that delivers fluids, medicines or nutrition into a patient at a set rate and volume. It is used in wards, intensive care, operating theatres, oncology units and home care.

Common types

  • Volumetric pump: uses a dedicated or standard infusion set to deliver larger volumes at controlled rates.
  • Enteral feeding pump: delivers liquid nutrition through a feeding tube using enteral-specific sets.
  • PCA pump: lets the patient give themselves a limited, programmed dose of pain relief.
  • Ambulatory pump: small, battery-powered pump carried by the patient.
  • Infusion workstation: a docking rack that powers and links several pumps to a central system.

Documents to ask for

Buyers usually ask for CE marking under the EU MDR or local registration, ISO 13485 for the maker, and IEC 60601-1 and IEC 60601-2-24 test reports.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

Why does it matter whether a pump needs dedicated infusion sets?

A pump that only works with its maker's sets ties the hospital to one supply source for every infusion. Buyers should check that those sets can be bought and registered locally at a sustainable cost before choosing the pump.
