Fetal monitor

A fetal monitor records the fetal heart rate and the mother's uterine contractions during pregnancy and labour, usually as a printed trace called a CTG. It is used in maternity wards, delivery rooms, antenatal clinics and, in handheld form, by midwives.

Common types

  • Handheld fetal Doppler: a small battery unit that lets the user hear and display the fetal heart rate.
  • Single fetal CTG monitor: records one fetal heart rate and contractions on a printed or digital trace.
  • Twin monitor: two ultrasound channels to record twins at the same time.
  • Maternal and fetal monitor: adds maternal parameters such as ECG, SpO2 and blood pressure.
  • Central monitoring system: displays traces from several bedsides at the midwives' station.

Documents to ask for

Buyers usually ask for CE marking under the EU MDR or local registration, ISO 13485 for the maker, and IEC 60601-1 and IEC 60601-2-37 test reports for the ultrasound part.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

Is the recorder paper standard across brands?

No. Paper width, grid and scale differ between makers and regions, and some printers need paper with a specific grid. Buyers should confirm the paper type and its local availability, and set the chart speed to the one their clinicians use.
