Sterilisation packaging and indicators

Sterilisation packaging keeps instruments sterile after processing, and indicators show that items have been exposed to a sterilisation process. Hospital sterile services departments, dental clinics and laboratories use them for every load.

Common types

  • Pouches and reels: paper and plastic film for single items.
  • Sterilisation wrap: crepe paper or nonwoven sheets for trays.
  • Rigid containers: reusable boxes with filters.
  • Chemical indicators: change colour when exposed to set process conditions.
  • Biological indicators: contain spores to test process lethality.

What to tell us when you ask for a quotation

  • Seal type and printed indicators
  • Indicator class and test conditions
  • Bowie-Dick test packs if needed
  • Pack size and shelf life

Documents to ask for

Buyers ask for CE marking under the EU MDR and ISO 13485 for the maker, plus conformity with ISO 11607 and EN 868 for packaging, ISO 11140-1 for chemical indicators and ISO 11138 for biological indicators.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

Can steam pouches be used for hydrogen peroxide sterilisation?

Usually not. Paper absorbs hydrogen peroxide, so those systems need spunbonded polyolefin (synthetic) packaging. Buyers should check the packaging is validated for the method used.
