Steam steriliser (autoclave)

A steam steriliser, or autoclave, sterilises instruments, textiles and waste using saturated steam under pressure. Hospitals, sterile services departments, dental clinics and laboratories use them for reusable items that tolerate heat and moisture.

Common types

  • Large steam steriliser: chamber volume of one sterilisation module or more, for hospital sterile departments.
  • Benchtop class B steriliser: with vacuum, for wrapped and hollow instruments.
  • Class N or S benchtop steriliser: for simpler loads.
  • Vertical laboratory autoclave: used for media and waste.
  • Pass through steriliser: double door between clean and dirty areas.

What to tell us when you ask for a quotation

Documents to ask for

Buyers usually ask for CE marking under the EU MDR, ISO 13485 for the maker, conformity with EN 285 for large sterilisers or EN 13060 for small ones, IEC 61010-2-040 and pressure vessel documents. Laboratory and waste autoclaves are not medical devices; they need pressure equipment and electrical safety conformity instead.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

What is the difference between class B, N and S benchtop sterilisers?

Under EN 13060, class B cycles handle wrapped, hollow and porous loads using vacuum. Class N cycles are for unwrapped solid items, and class S covers loads specified by the maker.
