Syringe

A syringe is a barrel and plunger used to inject medicines or draw fluids, usually supplied sterile and for single use. It is used in every clinical setting, from hospitals and clinics to immunisation programmes and home care.

Common types

  • Luer slip syringe: the needle pushes onto the tip.
  • Luer lock syringe: the needle screws onto the tip for a more secure connection.
  • Auto-disable syringe: locks after one fixed dose so it cannot be reused, used in immunisation.
  • Safety syringe: has a retractable or shielding mechanism to reduce needlestick injuries.
  • Insulin syringe: graduated in insulin units with a fixed fine needle.

Documents to ask for

Buyers usually ask for CE marking under the EU MDR or local registration, ISO 13485 for the maker, ISO 7886-1 for hypodermic syringes, ISO 7886-3 for auto-disable syringes, and sterilisation validation to ISO 11135 or ISO 11137.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

What is the difference between two-part and three-part syringes?

A three-part syringe has a rubber stopper on the plunger, which gives a smoother movement and a better seal. A two-part syringe has a one-piece plastic plunger without a separate stopper, and is used where the drug or the price calls for it.
