Drainage catheter and wound drain

Drainage catheters and wound drains remove fluid, blood, pus or air from a body cavity or surgical site after surgery or injury. They are used in theatres, surgical wards, intensive care and emergency departments.

Common types

  • Chest drainage catheter and system: a tube placed in the chest connected to an underwater seal or dry suction unit.
  • Closed suction wound drain: a perforated tube connected to a spring or bulb reservoir that applies gentle suction.
  • Passive drain: a corrugated or tube drain that lets fluid flow out by gravity.
  • Pigtail drainage catheter: a curled-tip catheter inserted through the skin under imaging guidance.
  • Drainage bags and bottles: collection containers matched to the drain type.

Documents to ask for

Buyers usually ask for CE marking under the EU MDR or local registration, ISO 13485 for the maker, ISO 10993 biocompatibility data, and sterilisation validation to ISO 11135 or ISO 11137.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

What is the difference between an underwater seal and a dry suction chest drainage unit?

An underwater seal unit uses a water chamber as a one-way valve and needs filling before use. A dry suction unit uses a mechanical valve and regulator instead, so it needs less preparation. Both connect to the chest drain catheter.
