Bandage and gauze

Bandages and gauze are woven or non-woven fabrics used to clean, cover and pad wounds and to hold dressings or support limbs. They are used in theatres, emergency departments, wards, clinics, first-aid kits and home care.

Common types

  • Gauze swabs: folded cotton gauze pieces, non-sterile or sterile, with or without an X-ray detectable thread.
  • Laparotomy sponges: large gauze pads with a loop and X-ray detectable element for surgery.
  • Gauze roll and conforming bandage: for holding dressings in place.
  • Elastic and crepe bandage: for compression and support of sprains.
  • Plaster of Paris and synthetic casting bandage: for immobilising fractures.

  • X-ray detectable element for surgical gauze
  • Sterile or non-sterile, sterilisation method and units per sterile pack

  • Quantity, destination country and the delivery terms you want (for example EXW, FOB or CIF).

Documents to ask for

Buyers usually ask for CE marking under the EU MDR or local registration, ISO 13485 for the maker, EN 14079 for absorbent cotton gauze, and sterilisation validation to ISO 11135 or ISO 11137 for sterile products.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

Why do surgical gauze swabs have a coloured thread woven in?

The thread contains an X-ray detectable material so that a swab left inside a patient can be found on an X-ray. Surgical teams also count swabs before and after operations.
