Drug delivery device

Drug delivery devices are the devices that give a medicine to the patient in a controlled way, such as pen injectors, auto-injectors, nebulisers and needle-free injectors. They are used in hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and by patients at home.

Common types

  • Pen injector: a reusable or disposable pen that delivers set doses from a cartridge.
  • Auto-injector: a spring-driven device that inserts the needle and injects a fixed dose at the press of a button.
  • Needle-free injector: pushes liquid through the skin with a fine high-pressure jet.
  • Nebuliser: turns liquid medicine into a mist to be inhaled, in jet, mesh or ultrasonic forms.
  • Inhaler spacer: a chamber attached to a metered-dose inhaler to help the patient inhale the dose.

What to tell us when you ask for a quotation

  • Device type and the drug or primary container it must work with (cartridge, prefilled syringe, vial)
  • Dose range, dose increments and delivered volume
  • Reusable or single use, and needle type or needle-free
  • For nebulisers: technology, particle size data, noise level and power source
  • Labelling language and whether it is supplied empty or combined with a drug by a pharmaceutical partner
  • Quantity, destination country and the delivery terms you want (for example EXW, FOB or CIF).

Documents to ask for

Buyers usually ask for CE marking under the EU MDR or local registration and ISO 13485 for the maker, ISO 11608 for needle-based injection systems and ISO 27427 for nebulisers; devices combined with a drug may also fall under medicines rules.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

Can a pen injector be used with any insulin or drug cartridge?

No. Pens are designed for specific cartridge sizes and drug concentrations, and the dose mechanism is set for them. A buyer must name the drug and cartridge, and the device maker must confirm compatibility.
