Blood bag
A blood bag is a sterile, flexible plastic container with anticoagulant solution used to collect, separate, store and transfuse blood and its components. It is used in blood banks, transfusion centres and hospitals.
Common types
- Single blood bag: one bag for collecting and storing whole blood.
- Double, triple and quadruple bag systems: linked bags for separating red cells, plasma and platelets.
- Top and bottom bag system: outlets at both ends for automated component separation.
- Blood bag with in-line leucocyte filter: removes white cells before storage.
- Transfer bags and paediatric bags: empty bags for splitting or storing components.
What to tell us when you ask for a quotation
- Configuration (single, double, triple, quadruple, top and bottom) and collection volume (for example 350 ml or 450 ml)
- Anticoagulant and additive solutions (for example CPDA-1, or CPD with SAGM)
- In-line leucocyte filter, sampling pouch and diversion pouch
- Bag material (PVC with DEHP or alternative plasticiser) and needle gauge
- Labelling requirements, shelf life and packing
- Quantity, destination country and the delivery terms you want (for example EXW, FOB or CIF).
Documents to ask for
Buyers usually ask for CE marking under the EU MDR or the destination country's registration, ISO 13485 for the maker, ISO 3826-1 for blood bags, and sterilisation validation; because the bags contain solutions, some countries register them as medicinal products.
Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.
What is a diversion pouch for?
A diversion pouch collects the first few millilitres of blood at the start of donation, which may contain skin bacteria from the puncture site. That blood is kept for testing rather than going into the main bag.
