Ultrasound gel
Ultrasound gel is a water based coupling medium that removes air between the probe and the skin so sound waves pass into the body. It is used in every ultrasound department and with some physiotherapy devices.
Common types
- Non sterile gel in bottles: for routine external scanning.
- Sterile gel sachets: for procedures, biopsies and probe covers.
- Bulk gel in 5 litre containers: for refilling bottles in busy departments.
- Coloured or clear gel: same function, chosen by user preference.

Documents to ask for
Buyers ask for CE marking under the EU MDR, ISO 13485 for the maker and ISO 10993 biocompatibility data. Sterile gel should come with a sterilisation validation, for example to ISO 11137 for radiation sterilisation.
Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.
Is sterile gel needed for every scan?
No. Non sterile gel is used for routine scans on intact skin. Sterile gel is used for procedures, scans on broken skin, and inside sterile probe covers.
