MRI scanner

An MRI scanner uses a strong magnetic field and radio frequency pulses to produce detailed images of soft tissue without ionising radiation. It is used for neurological, musculoskeletal, cardiac, abdominal and oncology imaging in hospitals and diagnostic centres.

Common types

  • 1.5T superconducting MRI: the general purpose standard for most hospital imaging work.
  • 3.0T superconducting MRI: higher field strength for advanced neuro, research and fine detail imaging.
  • Low field permanent magnet MRI: lower running cost and no helium refills, with longer scan times.
  • Open MRI: a C-shaped magnet design suited to claustrophobic and larger patients.

What to tell us when you ask for a quotation

  • Field strength and magnet type (superconducting or permanent).
  • Bore diameter, gradient strength and slew rate.
  • Number of receive channels and the list of coils required.
  • Clinical software packages: diffusion, spectroscopy, cardiac, angiography.
  • Helium management: zero boil-off magnet or refill schedule.
  • RF cage, chiller, power supply and site planning scope.
  • Quantity, destination country and the delivery terms you want (for example EXW, FOB or CIF).

Documents to ask for

Buyers ask for CE marking under the EU MDR or US FDA clearance, destination country registration, ISO 13485 for the maker and IEC 60601-1 with IEC 60601-2-33 test reports. A site planning guide and DICOM conformance statement are usually requested.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

Who supplies the RF shielded room?

The RF cage is often quoted as a separate item, either by the scanner maker or by a specialist shielding contractor. The quotation should state who designs, builds and tests the cage, and whether the magnetic shielding is included.
