PET-CT

A PET-CT system combines a positron emission tomography scanner with a CT scanner in one gantry, so functional and anatomical images are acquired in a single session. It is used mainly in oncology, cardiology and neurology at nuclear medicine centres.

Common types

  • Analogue PET-CT: uses photomultiplier tube detectors, common in earlier installed systems.
  • Digital PET-CT: uses silicon photomultiplier detectors for better timing and image quality.
  • SPECT-CT: a gamma camera combined with CT for single photon studies such as bone and thyroid scans.
  • Long axial field of view PET-CT: covers a larger part of the body in one bed position.

What to tell us when you ask for a quotation

  • PET detector type, axial field of view and time of flight capability.
  • Number of CT slices in the integrated scanner.
  • Bore size and maximum patient table load.
  • Reconstruction and quantification software required.
  • Radiopharmacy needs: cyclotron access, hot lab and dose calibrator.
  • Shielding design and room layout responsibility.
  • Quantity, destination country and the delivery terms you want (for example EXW, FOB or CIF).

Documents to ask for

Buyers ask for CE marking under the EU MDR or US FDA clearance, destination country registration, ISO 13485 for the maker and IEC 60601-1 test reports. The site will also need a licence from the national radiation protection authority. Ask for IEC 60601-2-44 reports for the CT part and NEMA NU 2 performance data for the PET part.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

Do we need our own cyclotron to run a PET-CT?

No. Many centres buy short half-life tracers such as FDG from a nearby cyclotron facility. Your own cyclotron makes sense only when supply distance or volume justifies it, because of its cost and shielding needs.
