Prosthetic hand

A prosthetic hand replaces some of the appearance and function of a missing hand, either moved by body movement or by electrical signals from the remaining muscles. It is fitted by prosthetists in rehabilitation centres and limb-fitting clinics.

Common types

  • Cosmetic or passive hand: restores appearance and can hold objects passively.
  • Body-powered hand or hook: opened and closed by a cable and harness moved by the shoulder.
  • Myoelectric hand: electrodes on the skin pick up muscle signals to drive motors in the hand.
  • Multi-articulating myoelectric hand: individually powered fingers that offer several grip patterns.
  • Partial hand prosthesis: replaces missing fingers or part of the hand.

  • For myoelectric hands: number of motors, grip patterns, grip force, electrodes and battery

Documents to ask for

Buyers usually ask for CE marking under the EU MDR or local registration and ISO 13485 for the maker, plus IEC 60601-1 or equivalent electrical safety reports for myoelectric hands.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

Does a myoelectric hand need training to use?

Yes. The user learns to control the hand with specific muscle contractions, and a prosthetist or therapist sets up the electrodes and grip settings. Buyers should arrange fitting and training support alongside the purchase.
