Hearing aid

A hearing aid is a small, battery-powered device worn in or behind the ear that amplifies sound for people with hearing loss. Hearing aids are fitted in audiology clinics, ENT departments, hearing centres and community hearing programmes.

Common types

  • Behind-the-ear (BTE): the device sits behind the ear and sends sound through tubing to an earmould.
  • Receiver-in-canal (RIC): a small body behind the ear with the speaker placed in the ear canal.
  • In-the-ear and in-the-canal: custom or semi-custom shells that fit inside the ear.
  • Body-worn and bone conduction aids: options for severe loss or ear conditions where an ear-level aid does not suit.
  • Over-the-counter style amplifier: a simpler, preset device for mild loss where local rules permit.

Documents to ask for

Buyers usually ask for CE marking under the EU MDR or local registration, ISO 13485 for the maker, and IEC 60118 series measurement reports for the hearing aid. Ask for IEC 60601-2-66 reports for electrical safety.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

Do hearing aids need fitting software?

Programmable hearing aids are adjusted to the user's hearing test using the maker's fitting software and a programming interface. Buyers should confirm the software, interface and training are available for their audiologists.
