Specimen container and swab

Specimen containers and swabs collect and hold samples such as urine, stool, sputum and nasal or throat secretions for laboratory testing. Hospitals, clinics, laboratories and screening programmes use them at the point of collection.

Common types

  • Urine container: screw cap cup, sterile or non sterile.
  • Stool container: with a spoon in the cap.
  • Flocked swab: nylon fibres that release more sample, often used for molecular tests.
  • Swab with transport medium: tube with medium to keep the sample stable.
  • Viral transport medium kit: swab and tube for virus testing.

Documents to ask for

Buyers usually request CE marking under the EU IVDR, which covers specimen receptacles, or the destination country's registration, plus ISO 13485 for the maker and ISO 11135 or ISO 11137 for sterile items.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

Why choose a flocked swab over a fibre swab?

Flocked swabs hold the sample on the surface of the fibres and release it more readily into transport medium. This is why they are often specified for molecular testing.
