Blood collection tube

Blood collection tubes hold venous or capillary blood samples with the right additive for each laboratory test. Hospitals, clinics, laboratories and blood collection centres use them every day for chemistry, haematology, coagulation and other testing.

Common types

  • EDTA tube: purple cap, used for haematology.
  • Serum tube with clot activator: red cap, for chemistry and serology.
  • Gel separator tube: separates serum or plasma after centrifugation.
  • Sodium citrate tube: blue cap, used for coagulation.
  • Fluoride oxalate or heparin tube: grey or green cap, for glucose or plasma chemistry.

Documents to ask for

Buyers usually ask for CE marking under the EU IVDR or local registration, ISO 13485 for the maker, conformity with ISO 6710 and sterility validation where the interior is sterile.

Certificates and registrations belong to the product and its manufacturer. We check them with you against the rules of your market before any order.

Why do caps come in different colours?

Cap colours show the additive inside, so staff fill the right tube for each test. The colour code is widely standardised but buyers should confirm it matches local practice.
